The Colorado Secretary of State is warning about a new and growing crime: Business Identity Theft. Theives hijack a business's identity by fraudulently filing a document with the Secretary of State and using that identity to establish lines of credit with banks or retailers. Identity thieves use the credit lines to purchase commercial electronics, home improvement materials, gift cards, or other items that are easily resold. Each victim has the potential for hundreds of thousands of dollars in credit charges, hours lost to recover from the fraud, and reputation damage. Colorado has been a national leader in combating this threat. The Secretary of State's office has several tools to help protect your business.
